More advanced surfers can explore the island, where they will find some big waves spots, particularly on the more exposed beaches on the Atlantic side. Ponta Preta beach in the South West corner, has long been a popular surf spot, with seasoned surfers. The winter months bring consistent, clean breaks with one of the best right handers in the World that breaks for about 400 metres. Waves can get to 30 feet some days at Ponta Preta.
A wide range of surfboards can be hired from the surf centre on Santa Maria beach. Surfers tend to team up and jump in a taxi to other spots around the island, or hire a jeep themselves. There are day trips that can be arranged for groups.
The water temperature around Sal, rarely dips below 20oC, so most days you will only need a rash vest. Air temperatures are warm all year with winter temperatures in the low to mid 20’s and summer months in the high 20’s to 30 degrees.
